Getting Better Sleep
Here at Down To Basics™, we believe that getting a good night’s sleep is essential for your health and well-being. There are many things you can do to improve your chances of getting a good night’s sleep, including making sure your bedding is as comfortable and luxurious as possible.
In this article, we discuss some other ways how you can get a better night’s sleep.
1. Invest in Comfortable Bedding
Having a comfortable bed, including goose down pillows and high-quality sheets, such as the linens we feature here, can make all the difference in your sleep quality. If you are sleeping on an uncomfortable mattress or old sheets, it is time to upgrade. You can also think about investing in a luxurious featherbed. Saving the best for last, we must say that having the best down comforter and pillows can make a huge difference in your sleep quality. Down is a soft, pliable material that is very comfortable for sleeping. It is also breathable and helps regulate your body temperature throughout the night. A high-quality down comforter can help you stay cool during the summer and keep you warm in the winter months. A down pillow will give you the support that you need to keep your spine straight all night long. (Read more about the benefits of down comforters here.)
2. Try a White Noise Machine
White noise machines create a consistent sound that can help drown out any other sounds. They can help block out traffic noise, outside noise, and even your partner’s snoring. If you struggle with a neighbor’s dog that barks all day or loud street noises, then you might want to invest in a white noise machine. Place it near your bed so that you can rely on the consistent sound anytime you need it.
3. Keep the Bedroom Cool and Dark
Your bedroom should be a place for rest and relaxation. It needs to be as quiet, dark, and cool as possible. You need a cooling system in your bedroom. You can use a window fan, your AC unit’s fan mode, or a standing fan to circulate the air so that it is constantly cool. You should also invest in blackout curtains, so no light gets into your bedroom at night.
4. Get Some Exercise
One of the best ways to improve your sleep quality is to get some exercise during the day. If you struggle with getting enough activity, consider making simple lifestyle changes. Take the stairs instead of the elevator, make your daily commute via bike, and try to walk as much as possible throughout the day.
5. Try out New Bedding Materials
There are many new types of bedding materials on the market today that can help improve your sleep quality. One of the latest types of bedding is called Tencel. Tencel is a type of fiber made from wood pulp and can help regulate moisture in the air, making you feel more comfortable at night. Another popular material is Siberian goose down, which we feature in some of most luxurious down comforters, and which can also help you stay comfortable throughout the night.
6. Stick to a Schedule
Sticking to a schedule can help you get better sleep each night. Try going to bed and waking up at consistent times each day. This includes on weekends so that your body gets used to going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day. Also, avoid naps during the day, as they can interfere with your nighttime sleep.
7. Create a Bedtime Ritual
Creating a bedtime ritual is one of the best ways to improve your sleep quality. Your bedtime ritual should begin at around the same time every night. It should include turning off all electronic devices at least one hour before attempting to fall asleep. You should also avoid eating heavy meals or drinking caffeinated beverages later in the evening, as this can cause digestive problems that will keep you up at night.
8. Try Aromatherapy
If you struggle to relax at the end of the day, then try out aromatherapy. Scents can help improve your sleep quality by creating calming effects which help you wind down. Experiment with different scents until you find one that works best for you. Lavender is one of the most popular scents for aromatherapy.
9. Install a Night Light
Night lights can be very comforting, especially if you are in the habit of having your home dark at all times. You can install a night light in your bedroom so that it is easier to get around during the night without having to turn on any other lights. Installing dim night lights in the hallway is also a good idea so that you do not stumble around when trying to use the bathroom.
10. Try an Eye Mask
An eye mask can help you block out any distractions that might be keeping you up at night. You should try an eye mask if outside light or street noise keeps you awake. Ensure you find an eye mask that is comfortable and blocks out all the necessary light.
11. Refrain From Drinking Before Bed
You should avoid drinking any fluids before bed, as this will make it hard for you to stay asleep. Try to schedule your last drink about two hours before going to sleep. This ensures there is enough time for the liquid to be absorbed and leave your body.
Avoid caffeine after lunchtime if you struggle with sleeping at night. It takes about six hours for half of the caffeine you ingest to be eliminated from your body. Cutting out caffeine is one of the most effective ways to improve your chances of getting better quality sleep.
Caffeine blocks adenosine which slows down nerve cell activity in your brain, making it difficult to fall asleep and stay asleep during the night. Stop drinking coffee after lunchtime or switch from coffee to decaf if possible. This will give your body more time before the caffeine kicks in when you fall asleep.
